International Snakebite Awareness Day 2023 (ISBAD 2023)

For millions of people (men, women and children) around the world, the risk of snakebites is a daily concern as they go about their daily activities, walking to school, gardening, farming, harvesting crops, gathering firewood, tending livestock, to fetch water or go to the toilet.

It is sad that about 7400 people are bitten by snakes every day, and between 220 and 380 die.

There are approximately 2.7 million incidents of venomous snakebites causing 81,000 to 138,000 deaths per year worldwide.

The economic costs of snakebites are very high, as they affect not only the victims but often their entire families, especially in poor communities in low and middle income countries.

To reduce this problem, we can start by providing education to the community about the presence of  snakes in their areas, the correct way to live in an area with snakes and encourage them to seek first aid and effective treatment provided by well-trained health workers to enable many victims to return to health more quickly good and productive life.

The aim of celebrating this day is so that all patients who have been bitten by venomous snakes can get the best medical care at an affordable cost, the availability of antivenom nearby and quickly, together with health workers who are properly trained to handle snakebite cases, to reducing the number of deaths and disability cases by 50% before 2030.
